First speed session in ages and my new BFF

Yesterday turned out to be quite an action packed day.

Chicago hosted some unseasonably warm temps yesterday that made the afternoon perfect for my return back into speed work. After 2 months of rest and base building miles only, I ventured back into quick running with 2x2 miles @ my current HMP (6:40ish miles).

Wasn't quite sure how this workout was going to pan out, but I actually felt really strong and relaxed. When I first start a new cycle, it usually takes me some time to figure out how to push through the speed but yesterday I felt surprisingly strong and ready to take on this workout. I started a bit conservatively and was running into the wind for the first portion of the workout and then had the wind at my back for the tail end of the tempo, which gave me a little extra assistance. While my splits were all over the place, I felt in control the entire time where my stride was relaxed hosting a smooth cadence and the breathing was under control.

This workout was just a benchmark for me to figure out where my current fitness level is in relation to where I'm headed this spring. Feeling pretty positive about the weeks and months to come and I'm more then ready to tackle another cycle.

Later in the evening, Fleet Feet Chicago was hosting a Chicago Marathon 2012 launch party that the hubby and I attended. Abdi Adirahman was a special guest for the evening where he spoke with the massive crowd of people for a bit and then accompanied us all on a 3 mile fun run. Unfortunately for me Abdi's fun run pace is a bit quicker then my own, so I kept company with the hubby for the run and caught up with Abdi post run.

My new elite runner BFF
It always amazes me how little elite runners are, I think that my waist is bigger then this speedster's and I may be a foot shorter then him but weigh as much as he does. He is a really friendly, funny, and humble guy that enjoyed just hanging around with the local runners. He puts in several 110 mile weeks for his build up to the marathon and said that he tries to get in some cross training but doesn't really have the time or energy for much beyond running. Excited to see what this guy does on August 12, 2012.

To top off the wonderful day I had yesterday, the hubby and I both registered for the 2012 Chicago Marathon.

D hasn't run a marathon since 2006, so this is an exciting adventure for both of us as we are looking forward to many runs together this summer and hopefully stretching across that finish line hand and hand in October.

I also won an entry into the race day VIP hospitality tent.

Not sure what this entails, but anything with the term VIP has me sold.

Chicago Marathon 2012 registration opens to the public today at 12 pm, who's signing up?

  1. I'm signing up! I have an alarm set on my calendar to remind me (although I've been thinking about this day for months, so really no reminder needed)!

This year's Chicago Marathon will be my first marathon. I've been trying to solidify my base mileage over the past few months, and the nerves are already starting to kick in...

    1. So excited for you Emily! Don't be nervous, you've got about 8 months to prepare. Marathons are challenging, but they are also a blast and the experience of a lifetime. No matter what the outcome, it will change your perspective on life forever.

    2. Thanks so much, Britt! You are going to do AWESOME at this marathon, too! I can't wait to see what this year in racing holds in store for all of us!

  2. Holy Cow, that was Abdi running along the Lakefront trail this morning (between 7:15 and 8:45am) after all! I ran a 13 miler and we passed each other once as I was going Southbound around Diversey Harbor and again as I was running Northbound around Fullerton. He saw me staring at him both times and smiled. I wasn't quite sure, but now that I know that it was probably him since he was at the Fleet Feet event last night!

  3. Awesome speed session! I love that it left you feeling strong and excited for the spring!

Congrats on signing up for Chicago with your husband! It will be fun to train together! I am not signing up this year. I am sticking to my guns that I will not sign up for a marathon until I get to a healthy weight and keep the weight off for awhile (now, that doesn't mean I won't train for one, I will just register for one that does not reach capacity).

I have never met an elite in person, but I think it would be so exciting to just SEE them! :)

  5. Awesome speed session! I know I always feel better throwing in a day of hard sweaty speed work once a week!

How cool you got to meet abdi! I really wish I went last night. And congrats for the VIP tent and getting your husband to sign up. Very cool! I've been trying to get my bf to sign up for a full, but I know this year isn't the year. I won't be signing up for Chicago because I'm on a self imposed mrathon hiatus for the rest of the year. If I'm in town October 7, I will be cheering loudly for you!

  10. I heard about this kick-off and for once I wished I was still living in Chicago. If I wasn't running Boston this year I'd totally sign up for Chicago again. Unfortunately, I can't afford it. I am still so sad that I had to miss it last year. I WILL run it one day. Maybe 2013.

That's a TEMPO run for you? Sheesh. Those are hard mile repeats for me. I can't believe that's your HMP. My goal: To one day be as fast as you! :)

  20. Thanks Pete, that is me! I was out doing a tempo along the lake on Tuesday taking advantage of the nice weather we were having. And to your previous comment, you most likely did see Abdi on the lakefront. When talking to him he told me he was going to do his long run Wednesday morning along the lakefront.

    1. Cool that you made the Tribune and cool about my actually seeing Abdi. I am now kicking myself for not getting a picture of him running along the lakefront. Oh well...

    2. He is such a nice guy that he most likely would have stopped to let you snap a photo of him.

  25. Great workout:) I had STRONGLY considered doing Chicago and then decided I'm just not making any decisions until after April 16th this year. I've run two marathons with my hubby-not hand in hand but we've both run and it's been so fun to share that experience! Fun for you guys!! Congrats on the VIP tent entry. Cool beans!

  26. Nice speed work session! Do you do it on a track or in a park?

Thats awesome about the VIP pass!! I got a vip pass one time and it involved free cooked brekkie and lounge chairs- sweet!

  27. I would love to do Chicago! Next year, maybe! You are running very strong and I am positive this new training by intuition method is going to work well for you. I don't think it would work for someone without a strong work ethic, but you are such a hard working runner that this will help you slow down when you would go to fast. Excited to follow along!
