Chicago Half Marathon Race Entry Giveaway

By now it should come as no surprise that I love half marathons,
even when they don't love me back.

Sharing the half marathon love today by giving away an entry to the Chicago Half Marathon on Sunday September 8th to one lucky Chicago Runner Girl reader.

This half starts in Jackson Park, right around the corner from the Museum of Science & Industry, before heading onto LSD. The course provides some of the most breathtaking views you'll ever have of beautiful Chitown as you are heading north on LSD into the skyline. LSD is closed entirely to the runners, and as you head back south you see all the runners who started after you flooding the opposite side of the road as the air is filled with cheers and footsteps from the other 10,000+ runners hitting the streets that day.

It's pretty dang neat.

On the course in 2012
This race is also part of the Windy City Challenge, where if you raced the Allstate Chicago 13.1 that was held on June 8th you receive an additional medal.

All you have to do to enter is:

Leave a comment below telling me below the coolest race medal you've ever received and why it's special to you

For an additional entry:

Tweet "I want to win an entry to the @ChicagoHalf from @ChiRunnerGrl"
(for your entry to count, you will have to leave a separate comment to say that you've tweeted, but you have to actually tweet as well)

***Giveaway is open to all interested parties and anonymous comments will be counted as long as a name is included (first/last/nickname/etc.) somewhere in the comment***

Contest will run until Tuesday June 25th at 12 pm CST where a winner will be chosen shortly after

  1. I've only run a few races but my favorite medal is my Chicago marathon medal just because of the significance. It was such a challenge for me to complete my first marathon so that medal will always be extra special to me.

  2. I've also only run a few races that have given out medals, and while I love my Chicago Marathon medal because it was a huge feat for me, I love the medal from last year's Chicago Women's Half. Not only was it the first time the event offered 13.1 miles, it was my first half, as well. Plus, it's just a fun design!

  3. I think my coolest is also my ugliest and it just has to do with the face that it was my first half. I think it was something I didnt think I could accomplish.

  4. My very first half marathon medal from the inaugural Illinois half marathon is my favorite. It has a piece in the shape of the state of Illinois that spins!

  6. My favorite race medal is the medal from my first marathon, the Detroit Marathon.

  7. I've never gotten a race medal before as I've only done 5Ks and 10Ks that haven't given them out. My favorite race shirt/handouts is from a Dino Dash on the campus I work at. Everything has fun dinosaurs on it, and the age groups are named after different dinosaurs and geological times (nerdy, I know!). I am training to run my first half though and would love this race entry!

  8. I've gotten a few medals that double as bottle openers, which I find fairly convenient (Ragnar Chicago and Wisconsin Marathon)!

  9. The coolest medal was from the Disney half marathon, which actually happens to be the very first half I ran so it's special to me.

  10. The medal I just got from the Allstate 13.1 Chicago is probably the coolest I have gotten so far. That being said, I would love to do the Chicago Half Marathon and complete the Windy City Challenge!

  11. My favorite medal is from the Indy Mini. It was my first half marathon, so it holds a special place in my heart.

  12. So many cool race medals: Boston cuz the race is awesome. Marine Corps cuz I overcame injury and the medal is just the coolest anyway.
My first half had no medal the first 3x I ran it.

  13. My coolest medal...well, I don't actually care for the medal itself but the 2011 Chicago Marathon because it was my first marathon.

  14. Favorite race medal was this year, just a few weeks ago. Hospital Hill in Kansas City, 40th anniversary! Tweeted as well!

  15. Hope I can still enter! I never entered a race. I just run a lot. I actually like the idea of http://www.medals4mettle.org/ - “non-profit organization that facilitates the gifting of marathon, half marathon, and triathlon finishers’ medals. Runners from around the world give their hard earned medals to Medals4Mettle. Our worldwide network of physicians and volunteers then awards these medals attached to a Medals4Mettle ribbon to children and adults fighting debilitating illnesses who might not be able to run a race, but are in a race of their own just to continue to live their life.”

I'd probably donate the finishing medal to that.

  16. My 2013 Boston Marathon medal is my favorite for sentimental reasons (I didn't get to finish the race, but they awarded it to me the next day when I picked up my bag...they just sent out my projected finish time, and while I still did not get to finish the race, it feels nice that they've honored me with this), but the coolest medal I ever got was from my first half marathon: the Rock 'n' Roll Providence Half. I mean, there's glitter in it. And I. Love. Glitter.

Homegirl wants to run a race in Chicago so fingers crossed!

  19. I actually don’t like medals and tend to donate all of mine to a cancer charity however, I did make sure to keep the medal from my first ½ marathon. I keep it in my car to motivate me to run when I am tired and don’t feel like doing anything but vegging out on my couch.

  20. The coolest race metal I have ever gotten was the 2013 Albany marathon medal. It was my first marathon and meant so much to me to actually finish!

  21. I think my fav is the Wisconsin marathon medal. It was a goal to run another marathon for my birthday (had been seven years since my first) and I did it a few months early! Plus the cheesy theme is cute.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I would have to say my favorite is also my first medal, and it was for Houston Marathon 2007. My first half marathon a few months earlier didnt give out medals until AFTER that year and boy was I SAD!! But I had the memories!!

My two medals from Chicago (full) 2010 and 2011 are dear to me as well because of the fact I ran in the unexpected heat and survived!

  23. Tweeted!

I want to win an entry to the @ChicagoHalf from @ChiRunnerGrl !! Who doesnt want to go to Chicago TWICE in one year!?

  24. My favorite medal is my first full marathon medal from Surf City (Huntington Beach, CA) - the half and full have a surfboard design (half is a smaller version of the full), and each year, the surfboard design changes along with a theme name (i.e. "inspire"). It's my first full medal, so obviously it'll be special forever!

  25. My fave medal is probably my 2011 BofA Chicago Marathon medal just because it is my first marathon. That being said, I'm pretty freaking excited to get my first Ragnar medal this weekend!

  26. The Santa HM was a pretty cool medal!. I've been on the lookout for a Sunday HM in the fall so the Chicago Half would be PERFECT.

  27. My Boston medal is the coolest to me... because I had to work really hard to earn it.

  28. No doubt the 2012 Chicago Marathon medal is my fav. It was my first marathon and 5 years to do the date that my dad ran his first marathon after being diagnosed with Parkinson's.

  30. My favorite race medal is from the Green Bay 1/2 marathon in 2009. It wasn't a PR -- in fact, it was probably a PW -- but I ran the race 6 weeks after my father passed away and I had raised $10K for the American Cancer Society. My mom passed away on Mother's Day and my sister and I are forming a team to run the Chicago 1/2 in her memory. This time, our goal is to raise $15K for the American Cancer Society.

An entry to the race would allow us to have one extra person support our team and run in honor of my mom.

  31. I love my Carlsbad 5000 medal from 2012, because it was my first "race" while pregnant. My husband ran the race, too, and we had a wonderful time. It was the first time I'd actually taken in the scenery during a race instead of focusing on running as quickly as I could.

  33. My favorite medal has to be the one I just received for completing the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll half marathon. Not only does it have a very cool design, it is also super heavy! Most importantly though - it was symbolic of the medal I didn't get the previous year. I made the decision to pull out of the full marathon at mile 23, due to an injury and got a DNF. The reality of my decision hit me when I was carted to the finish line and saw everyone crossing. My stomach sank and I immediately regretted stopping. (Mind you, I would have REALLY hurt myself had I tried to push through... but still.) Anyway, that is why this year's medal was so important - even though I ran a different distance, it was the same race. That will ALWAYS be a reminder to me that quitting hurts far more than pushing through the pain.

I am medal-less! I'm still very much a newbie runner...the races I've done this past year have been sans medal. I've been looking for my first half-marathon to register for and I'd love to have this be my first race medal! Also, I'm moving to Chicago at the beginning of September and would love to have this be the way I spend my first real weekend in Chicago! Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

  38. Well as much as I almost didn't comment, I will because I have a half the next weekend. ;)

The medal that is the most special to me is my very first half marathon finisher medal.

  39. There are so many race medals I love for different reasons. The first one that came to my mind was the Little Rock Half Marathon medal in 2012. I meet a blogger friend for the first time in real and helped her to a marathon PR! We had an amazing time and it felt like I knew her for years!

  40. My coolest race medal is the 2013 Marine Corps historic half. It's HUGE and it's very special to me since both my dad and husband were marines.

  41. My favorite race medal is the one I just received at the Rock n Sole Quarter marathon in Milwaukee. The race came at the end of my first week of Chicago Marathon training and it was my longest run post-baby. My time improved drastically since having a baby, it was my fastest 6.5 miles ever. I'm very proud of that medal :-)

  42. In 2010 I was running the Madison Marathon and had to drop out due to soaring temperatures and heat exhaustion. I fell into a deep depression after that. Months of training, all that work, and what felt like for nothing. Someone convinced me to sign up for the NorthShore Half Marathon- I had never done it before, I felt too lethargic to do it- but I was coerced. With every mile of that race I felt healed. My body seemed to come alive again as it remember "Hey, I can do this". And at the end, when they put that medal over my head- I burst into tears. The medal did it for me- I would run again. So that medal means the most to me. It means that no matter what happens during one race, there will always be another one......

  43. My favorite medal is the first I ever got..I've only done 2 half marathons (so far!), but so far I've run them both with my sister to raise money for ALS. My uncle is battling ALS and so my sister and I worked together to raise money and awareness for the disease. Our first race (the Rock N Roll Providence 1/2) was pouring rain. The entire run was painful but we did it together for a cause that was so close to our hearts. I just kept on thinking how much my uncle would have loved to be able to be suffering right along with us, and in some ways he is. My first medal reminds me of what we can really do if we put our minds to it!

  44. My favorite medal is not actually a medal. I ran the Champion run up at Montrose Beach a few years ago, and I won my age group in the 5k. The prize was a huge beer mug that I promptly filled with water to rehydrate myself after that hot race.

    1. I forgot to add why it's special. It is special to me because I feel like it is the first race where I felt like a real runner because I turned in my best running time ever and made me think I could do a half under 2 hours this year.

  46. The coolest medal I received was the Chicago Marathon, cool as in it meant the world to me at the time. I still look back to the importance in my life doing that race.

  47. My favorite medal is my Tiffany's necklace from the San Francisco Women's Marathon. Being from Chicago, the hills in this race made it a tough course. Receiving this necklace made the hard work worth it!

  48. My Wisconsin marathon medal from this year is the coolest one I've ever received. It's in the shape of a cool cheese guy. It's special to me because it's from my first marathon.

  49. I have so many favourites!

My first medal ever is a teeny little generic thing, but it was for my first 10K - a PDR. My husband ran the same race and doesn't even want to hang it, but I hung it proudly on my medal rack because it was the first time I realized I could be a runner and run and earn medals.

For the look of the medals? My Lincoln HM is a big old shiny penny and is pretty darn cool.

The accomplishment? It's a tie. My very first half was the Chicago Polar Dash and that stained glass medal is HUGE, impossible to miss on medal rack and my very first half is worth remembering, a huge, huge accomplishment. Tied with - the North Shore Half on 6/2, because at 5 1/2 mo pregnant I proved I hadn't lost my fitness and could still finish a half!

  51. My favorite race medal is from the Boston Marathon 2011. I qualified in 2009, so 2011 was the last year I could run it. It's my favorite since shortly after I signed up, got accepted, and started training for the marathon I was diagnosed with cancer. I did not want to pass up this opportunity. The goal of finishing really kept me going, kept me running through my surgeries and through my chemo. It was hard though, My longest run was 12 miles, there were mornings where I could only make 2, only to stop in the middle of the road and break down in tears, or dry heave due to the metallic taste in my mouth. But, in between chemo treatments on April 18, 2011, I lined up for the start, freezing with my bald head. I believed that I would finish in maybe 5+ hours, if at all. At about mile 8, I knew I wasn't going to make it, I was fading fast. Then my angel arrived, her name is Shari and she ran up next to me and talked and ran with me from mile 8 to 18. I got a second wind and she told me to "just go." I finished that marathon in 3:43. People kept saying that I was their inspiration... but I knew I would never have finished without Shari and the support system I had - they all gave me my wings, they carried me. Every time I look at that medal, it resets me. It reminds me that focus, inner-strength, "stubbornness", and life's unexpected angels really do exist and the little things just really aren't worth worrying about. I hope to repay the favor one day... to be someone's wings. That medal is the only medal on my wall. Though I love every race I did, this is the one medal that constantly tells me "I'm alive."

due to a last minute change in circumstances, i could not do the race. aside from being absolutely devistated, i do NOT want my training to go to waste.
needless to say, i would LOVE an entry into this half and finally get my medal!!
